13 Juli 2011 | Vietnam, Ho Chi Minhstad
We walked to our first visit Research Institute Aquaculture II (RIA II).The turbulent walk through the busy center of Ho Chi Min City (HCMC) gave us the first impressions of Vietnam. For five of the seven students this is their first time in Asia and with all the motorbikes around a real eye-opener. At ten o clock we were welcomed at the Research RIA II.
Dr. Hao, Dr. van Trong and Dr. Bay from the division of research management presented the objectives and research topics of RIA II. A short introduction and history of pangasius and shrimp farming in Vietnam, as well as the different farming systems are discussed. After the theory we received some good advices and further help with the organization of the summer school. We will meet again next week to visit the shrimp farms.
We knew Dr. Bosma and Dr, Verdegem from Wageningen University and Research center (WUR) were in HCMC at the same time; therefore we decided to have dinner together. After the local dish ‘hot pot’ whereby everybody ate from the same pot with seafood, we moved on Fresh Studio.
Mr. Nicolas Privet welcomed us at Fresh Studio, the company started in 2006 as initiator and developer of unique value chains. By an example about vegetables the companies principles were explained. Afterwards we went in detail on the pangasius chain. Mr. Privet presented us a lot during two hours in the evening, especially practical information about farming, certification, finances, (live fish) transport and retailing. After the theory we travelled towards the large Binh Dien Market. During the night we were impressed by many fish species (up to hundred different species) shellfish, squids, sharks, tuna and dolphins are expected at this market, but we did not see any sea mammals. Farmed species like shrimp, tilapia, pangasius and eels are sold alive. We also visited the meat and vegetable trade halls, which were just as impressive! When walking around we realized we are just as much an attraction for the locals to observe, as we watch them trading the fish. Nicolas Privet never brought so many (foreign) visitors here before, but we feel free to observe and the group liked the atmosphere.
We were all very excited about this first busy day, when we returned around four in the morning at the hostel.
Thanks again for all the people who help us!
