After our shrimp adventures in Soc Trang province we decided to move on to Vinh Long to analyse the data we had gathered. To say we struggled as a diverse group with a broad range of n=1 data would be an understatement. Without supervision or guidance, the processes of brainstorming and agreeing on the general layout and boundaries of our report took unimaginably long. Examples: were we to write a scientific report, were we to try to deliver quantitative analysis, were we to talk about food safety? Pfff, it was tough!

Maybe this is the time to (re)introduce the group to you, as interpreted by me:

Herman - Aquaculture specialization interested in technical and financial implications of implementing sustainability labels.
Pieke - Aquaculture specialization with detailed knowledge on organism level and culture technology
Kenny - Aquaculture specialization interested in nutrition and metabolism, with background in biology. An ecologist who wants to see the bigger picture and it's interactions.

Holger - From Germany. Biotechnology specialization.
Paul - From Nigeria. At 36 years of age, has valuable experience working throughout the aquaculture sector. Continually compares the VN sector with it's Nigerian counterparts.

Iris - (marine) management/governance specialization. Interested in the value chain and the contractual relations within and from outside the sector.
Sarah - Animal Sciences Major. Also interested in governance issues, but has knowledge on production systems and animal welfare issues.

The variety in specialisations, (academic) backgrounds, gender (too many men!) and personal working styles have forced us to spend a lot of time 'pointing the noses in the same direction'.

Perhaps this phase of the project can best be compared to our final day in Vinh Long: the water pump of our hotel broke down. The fixing would take 15 minutes. An hour later I was flushing brown water out of the pipes followed by a nice shower. The pump would break down twice more before we'd checked out and left to the buses, but everyone was fresh and peppy! Things just take a little longer.

summerschool

Seven enthusiastic students of the MSc 'Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management' of Wageningen University are currently in Vietnam for a three week summer school to get insight in the sustainability of shrimp and pangasius production and the impact of certification schemes. For this reason, we will visit different farms, research institutes, universities and other companies. The trip is organized by ourselves, the students, with the help of the chair groups Aquaculture and Fisheries and Environmental Policy of Wageningen University and Can Tho University and RIA 2. This summer school is financially supported by IDH, Coppens International BV., Wageningen University Fund and the study Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management. With this website, we would like to keep you up to date on our summer school!
